Meetings/Events

We meet several times a year for program meetings about hearing loss. We also meet for social events including lunches and group outings.

Now that the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided, we have resumed in-person program meetings and events. We try to make the the program meetings available via Zoom to remote attendees. Announcement and details of future virtual (and live, when possible) meetings will be provided in our HLAA Wake newsletter.

You can read previous newsletters at the right and get a good idea of the kinds of meetings and events we have. You're invited to join us. Our meetings are free and open to anyone interested in hearing loss. We have no dues, so just join us when you can.

If you would like to be notified by email of upcoming events, please email Steve Barber.

2024 Wake Chapter Scholarship Announced

The Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) Wake Chapter will again sponsor scholarships for high school seniors with hearing loss.

Application and reference forms for the 2024 Wake Chapter scholarship are .pdf FORMS that can be downloaded here and filled in on-line:

Submissions will be accepted from January through March, and recipients will be announced in May. The chapter has awarded scholarships to 10 students since the program began in 2020.

Applicants must reside in Wake County and be seeking acceptance at an accredited university, college, community college or trade school. They also must have a moderate hearing loss or more and wear a hearing aid or cochlear implant. Financial need is not a consideration. The $500 scholarship is a one-time award and will be sent to the recipient when s/he begins classes.

The HLAA Wake Chapter scholarship program is made possible by the generous support of participants in the North Carolina Walk4Hearing, a hearing health awareness and fundraising event.

Two Recognized With 2023 Wake Chapter Scholarships

Joanne Setti of Apex and Ethan Slonac of Wake Forest have been recognized with college scholarships through the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) Wake Chapter Scholarship Program.

  • Setti graduated from Apex Friendship High School and is attending Wake Tech in Raleigh.

  • Slonac graduated from Heritage High School and is attending Wake Tech in Raleigh.

Example Meeting

Here's a photo of an earlier meeting to give you an idea of what to expect ... friendly people sharing information about making the most of their hearing and living better with the best technology and strategies.

Our meetings are usually very accessible including an audio loop (for people with telecoils in their hearing aids or CIs), and live captions of everything said displayed on a screen.

Area Served

The Wake Chapter serves the Raleigh area. Members come from Raleigh, Apex, Cary, Knightdale, Wake Forest, Garner and other outlying areas of Wake County.

Gael Hannan Zoom

The link, below, MAY let you download and watch the HLAA Wake Chapter Zoom of 17 Nov 2022.

Gael Hannan was the presenter and it was enjoyed by 23 of our members. The video is just over an hour.

If you missed it, or just want to see it again, you can click on the link below. The download will take a long time (the file is over 600 MB and the download took 30 seconds during the test), depending on your internet speed.

Unfortunately, although the original was captioned, we haven't been able to get the captions to work correctly from our Wake Chapter Server.

This has been tested on a Windows system using Edge as the browser. There are NO GUARANTEES on Macs, iPhones, Android Phones, or any tablets.

But here's how it worked on Windows/Edge: Clicking on the link below, will download the video (.mp4) file to your Download folder. It will not autoplay, but you can then play the video by opening the .mp4 file from the Download folder. Good luck, and don't forget to delete big file from your download folder.

Newsletters

The HLA Wake Chapter occasionally publishes a brief newsletter; you can see the lastest and past newsletters by clicking on the links below.

Accessibility

An audioloop is provided at all meetings so people with telecoil equipped hearing aids or cochlear implants can hear the audio as well as possible. A Computer Aided Notetaker (CAN) types and displays the text of all speech at most meetings so even people who can't hear at all can follow the meeting.

Funding and Treasurer

HLAA Wake Chapter is supported completely by volunteers. We have no local dues and are funded by donations. We recommend that you join the HLAA national organization at www.hearingloss.org, because without the HLAA national organization, we wouldn't exist. But everyone is welcome to participate in our local chapter.

HLAA Wake Chapter is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our EIN is 27-5116656. You can also View our Approval letter from the IRS. Depending on your tax situation, your donations to our Chapter may be tax deductible.

Donations can be brought to meetings or sent to our Treasurer:
