A hearing aid is anything that helps you hear better. Early hearing aids were mechanical, and typically involved horns or funnels and tubes to direct sound into a person's ears.

Early in the 20th century, electronic hearing aids were developed, but were expensive, large and not particularly effective.

About the middle of the 20th century, electronic hearing aids became small enough and cheap enough to be of some help to larger numbers of people, but they were still not very sophisticated.

During the last half of the 20th century, dramatic improvements were made in hearing aids. They became more powerful, more adaptable, smaller, and generally more effective than earlier aids.

If you use (or are thinking about using) hearing aids, there is a lot for you to learn about making the most of your hearing. Hearing aids can be a tremedous help, but one thing they won't do is return your hearing to normal. The best they can do is help you hear better; it's up to you to learn how to make that happen.
