caller-id

Caller-id can be a trememdous help for people with hearing loss. Many people with hearing loss have difficulty hearing on the phone. They may not recognize who is calling just by their voice, but if they knew who was calling, it would make it easier to hear the call.

That may sound strange, but there is a good reason that knowing who is calling can help them understand the conversation better. While it doesn't actually help them hear better, it does help them "tune-in" to the voice patterns of the caller, especially if the caller is someone they know. It also helps them because they are likely to know some of the subjects that any particular caller might bring up. So, they are able to pick out a word here or there that they might have otherwise missed, because of that extra context that knowing who is calling provides.

Caller-id is usually an extra feature of wired or remote phones and often costs several dollars per month, but it may be more than a convenience to people with hearing loss; it may be the thing that makes the difference between being able to use the phone and not being able to use the phone.

Caller-id is often included in cell phone and VOIP contracts.
