A relay operator is called a "Communication Assistant", or CA for short.
When you make a relay call, the CA will type what the other person says, so you can read it on your TTY, VCO phone, or computer.
Relay calls can now be made through the Internet using a computer and one of several free IP-Relay services.
If you are using VCO, then you will speak directly to the party you called. If you are not using VCO, then you will type on your TTY or computer what you want to say to the party you called, and the CA will voice what you typed to the party you called.
